The North American Shotokan Association (NASKA) is a North American branch of the Japan Karate Association, teaching traditional Shotokan Karate-do. Founded in 1989, NASKA has member dojos in communities throughout British Columbia. Each NASKA dojo is also a member of the Japan Karate Association, Karate B.C. and the National Karate Association. Our Chief Instructor is Yasuo Sakurai Shihan (6th Dan). Sakurai Sensei makes regular visits to teach at all NASKA member dojos. He also conducts monthly NASKA seminars for: brown and black belts training; all level training; and tournament training. In addition to these events, NASKA also holds an annual summer camp, an annual junior members tournament and sponsors special seminars with visiting instructors. The high technical standards maintained in NASKA were recently demonstrated when Don Sharp won the men's individual kumite event in Osaka at the 1996 World Shoto Cup, the world championship of the Japan Karate Association. Don also recently took second place in men's individual kumite at the 1997 Pan-American Games held in Lima, Peru.
